11/13/2007: "The Imperial Presidency, or, If not now when?"

It is all well and good to work for a Democratic President and a larger Democratic majority in congress, but at the risk of sounding iconoclastic, it will not be enough, not nearly enough.
The destruction of our constitutional government, the rise of the Imperial Presidency, and the politization of everything from HHS through NASA to the Justice department, will not be easily undone.
I ask you, which of the Democratic presidential candidates will make it a major goal of their first term to reduce their own power. When will a Congressional majority work to take away the clout of an executive of their own party? Precious few. Certainly not Clinton, Obama, Edwards or Dodd.
Our government has been taken over by corporate interests. The reason that the current cabal is willing to sell even their own party down the river to stay in Iraq and rattle the sabers at Iran is simple GREED. Every day that we stay the course is another $200 million dollars stolen from the poor of the world (and the taxpayers of the United States) and pocketed by the Bush/Chaney/Haliburton/Blackwater/Saudi cartel.
In the traditions of the Feudal Kings of the past, they are sacrificing the lives of the youth of their country and the wealth of their subjects in order to enrich themselves and their classmates.
If we don’t do something now, we may not be able to roll back this new form of government for decades, if ever.
For these reasons I believe we mush support Impeachment. If we don’t make a clear historical change of direction before the next election, I fear the political will to do so will become more, not less available.
I have called Conyers to urge him to hold hearings on the Kucinich bill.
