07/10/2006: "My Parking Tickets"
The year was oh I don't remember, sometime in the mid nineteen seventies.
I owned a Volkswagon Bus and was extremely active.
I was working with the Wounded Knee Legal Defense committee,
The Alive and Trucking Theater,
The Black Hills Alliance,
Christopher Robin Printers Collective,
Bread and Roses Collective,
The Native American Solidarity Committee,
Various Day Care Co-ops,
food co-ops,
etc. etc. etc.
I was served a summons, it seems that my Bus, which I owned, which was used widely by all of the above organizations, had many many parking tickets.
I went to court, was told I had several thousand dollars in fines to pay. There was no way I could pay it, so instead, I surrendered my drivers license for a time (might have been six months, perhaps 90 days, I don't remember).
Anyway this was supposed to clear my record. It didn't, as I was arrested a year later for an unpaid parking ticket that predated the license suspension, but that's another story.
Am I a scoflaw? Do I have ethical lapses? Well perhaps, but you have to look beyond the above facts to find them.

On my driving record...
I used to be quite a speeder, and have slowed down a lot in the last decade
or so. But about 5 few years ago I got a speeding ticket in Wisconsin. I was
going about 85 in a 65 mph zone. I paid the ticket with a credit card on the
spot to the traffic officer, in consideration for reducing it to 74 mph.
Several months later, I sort of cruised through a stop sign on 54th street
at the bottom of that hill traveling west from Lyndale with my daughter and
some other kids in the car. I got pulled over and turns out my license was
suspended due to non-payment of that Wisconsin ticket. I explained things
and the officer let me go with no ticket for anything and urged me to clear
up the matter. Just another perk of being a middle-aged white lady. When I
contacted the state about my drivers license, they told me clerical errors
average 15-20%, and it took a few months, several faxes and certified
letters to straighten it out.
On Keith Ellison...
Over the years, I have asked Keith for his support on several environmental
and justice causes, eg. co-host fundraiser, contribute to silent auction,
attend event, support affordable housing efforts, brownfields clean-up and
many more. He has said "yes" to every single request. His follow through was
about 90%. But multiply my requests by several hundreds of other activists
and colleagues making requests on his time, throw in a full-time law
practice, serving in the state legislature, a wife who works full time and a
few kids including teenagers involved in sports, serious dedication to some
causes, parents and in-laws out of state that are getting older to visit on
holidays and in the summer...and you have a schedule that is, to put it
lightly, full. In my experience, he over-commits. I have seen him put off
one thing to focus on the most urgent need. Invariably it was something he
was doing for someone else. I told him one time that "the road to hell is
paved with good intentions." That he has been disorganized with bill paying
doesn't surprise me. But I have observed that he has improved considerably
over the years in focus and prioritization. It is an inconvenient lesson
that many of us have learned over time.
I see in Keith someone with a great heart, powerful intellect, loyal friends
and supporters, proven legislative track record, inspiring oratorical skills
and strong potential for leadership, not to mention the real-life experience
to represent us well in Congress. So I am keeping the faith with Keith.

Keith is my State Rep. I regret that he will no longer
be my State Rep but I'm willing to let him become my US
Congressman :) I've known Keith in several contexts and will
pass a long a couple specific observations here.
I was not an early supporter of Keith for DFL endorsement
when he first ran. As I sometimes do I stayed "uncommitted"
going into the DFL endorsement convention. I remember Maura
Brown, a white neighborhood activist from Harrison nbhd, making a persuasive argument for Keith but so I suspect I was leaning
towards Keith going into the convention but I maintained my
uncommited status. In part I was still regretting the loss
of my then current State Rep Greg Gray. (I hope Greg
represents me again; he is running for Hennepin County
Commissioner against Stenglein in this district this year.)
At the convention there was a question and answer session
with the candidates. I remember asking if the candidates
supported Instant Runoff Voting which at that time (2002)
was a new proposal here. I remember Keith answering from
the stage that he was unfamiliar with IRV but based on my
description, it sounded good to him and that he would
support it. I appreciated his candor and willingness to
think on his feet.
The other memory is not about political qualifications
directly. It happens that his kids attended the same Mpls Public Schools elementary school at the same time as my son
(Emerson Spanish Immersion Learning Center, 14th & LaSale -
near downtown 1993-2002). I did not know his family well
then but we had a passing acquaintence. I was always
impressed with the way his 4 kids conducted themselves (and
since as campaign workers). One specific memory was at a
school performance in the gym. One of his sons - aged about
10? - recited an excerpt from a speech I think from Malcom
X. The performance was very impressive. He articulated,
and projected so you could hear him. He spoke with
confidence and passion and emphasis. I only know of a very
few other kids who could have performed like that at that
age. And while it is in part a matter of natural skills and
personality it also reflects parenting which is why I relate
it here.

who has one moving violation ticket from when I made a
bad quick decision to make a left turn off Washington Ave around
a construction site in front of a patrol car. I've never
had a ticket while riding my bicycle - my usual transport.
